The Pantheon

The Pantheon was originally built in 27 A.D. It was burned down in 110 A.D. and then replaced in 120-5 A.D. by Emperor Hadrian. The temple was made into a church by Pope Boniface IV around 610 A.D. It was renamed at that time to the Church of St. Maria and Martyrs. The building has 20 foot thick walls. The diameter is 142 feet at the base. The interior is 142 foot high. The dome has a opening in the middle 29 feet in diameter which is the only opening for natural light. The dome was very advanced for the time and became a model for dome construction for hundreds of years to follow.
